This was one of the last projects I did at Toxic. Norwegian oil and gas supplier Hydro constructed in 2006 an undersea pipeline. This pipeline, which they boast is the longest undersea pipeline in the world, now transports gas from an undersea drill station to the UK. Toxic was asked to produce animations and press material for this project, and I did some detailed 3D renders that they used to promote the pipeline around the world. The animation is quite simple, showing an angler fish following a part of the huge pipeline resting at the bottom of the sea. He then ends up at this shiny plaque which reads 'The Worlds Longest Subsea Pipeline', before swimming off on his own.
We were two at Toxic that worked on this project. André Hitsøy built all the models and made the textures, and also did the animation. I was in charge of art direction, shaders, rendering and compositing.
One interesting detail about the film, was that Hydro wanted the film screened across three plasma screens. The final resolution ended up being something like 2600 pixels wide, real huge images that demanded quite a lot of detail. The two first images here are just crops from entire super-widescreen final output, but if you scroll down you can see how the original format looks like.

The project actually started out as a print advert. Hydro liked the print so much, they wanted to do an animation from the same scene. If you compare the print ad above with the other images, there are a couple of differences, particularily in the lighting. Looking back at it, I think I like the print ad the best because of its stronger mood.
